The History of Cinema since 1873 : a talk by Randall Warniers

Monday, October 27:00—8:00 PMGoodwin ForumMain Library129 Main Street, Concord, MA, 01742

Randall Warniers, coordinator of Films at Fowler, presents the History of Cinema since 1873 with a one-hour talk illustrated with images from iconic films.

Shortly after the development of photography in France in the 1830s, many inventors tried to create devices to show “moving pictures” that mimicked the motion of life. It wasn’t until 1895, however, when the Lumiere brothers popularized their one-minute real-life “actualités,” that cinema as we know it took an important leap forward. This one-hour presentation—with illustrations—will look at the broad history of cinema from its earliest origins to modern blockbusters, and describe the technological innovations and advances in storytelling that have transformed “moving pictures” into the industry that dominates the world today. All attendees will receive a handout summarizing the iconic movies and important milestones mentioned in the presentation.
