Sustainable Makes: Visible Mending

Saturday, December 1612:00—4:00 PMThe WorkshopMain Library129 Main Street, Concord, MA, 01742

Learn how you can use embroidery, patching, and darning techniques to turn your damaged clothes and textiles into unique works of art in this hands-on workshop with local artist Catherine Karp! Recommended for ages 12 to 112.

Participants will learn about materials and methods for mending that will repair and give a creative and unique look to damaged or well-loved items. Patching with raw or cleanly whip stitched edges will be demonstrated. Reinforcing from above and below will also be taught. Many options for thread, stitching, and decorative finishing will be covered, as time allows. Please bring a few items with you, as you may decide what to work on during the workshop. All materials will be supplied but you are welcome to bring your own scissors, needles, threads, and fabric scraps with you.

Catherine Karp has been repairing things since she made clothes for her dolls and stuffed animals as a child. She teaches art to K-8 students at Oak Meadow School. She works with Art For All in West Concord, teaching weekly classes to multi-aged groups. Catherine has taught in a variety of settings, and worked with students of all ages. She’s very happy that it’s illegal to throw out textiles in Massachusetts.

This workshop will also be offered as a September 16 session - please register for only one session. If you are wait-listed, you are welcome to join both session waitlists in case of cancellations. Additionally, both wait-listed patrons and walk-ins are welcome to visit the Library at the listed date and time for this event. Should any registered attendees cancel less than 24 hours in advance or fail to arrive 10 minutes past the listed start time, spots may be granted to those waiting in the order they arrive.
