Films at Fowler: Breaking Boundaries - The Edge of the World

Wednesday, August 177:00—8:30 PMZoom

Please note that Randall has changed the film selection. Black Narcissus is no longer available on Kanopy.

Films at Fowler continues in summer 2022 with Breaking Boundaries!

For 26 years Concord film viewers gathered on winter evenings at Fowler Library to see some of the most interesting and stimulating examples of current and classic cinema from around the world. That movie series, now called Films at Fowler, changed to an online format in 2021 and continues in that format in 2022. Because we don’t meet in person, we will now view—on your own time schedule—selected movies on Kanopy, a free streaming service available to Library patrons. We will then gather on Zoom on scheduled evenings for a lively movie discussion. The theme of the movies in summer 2022 is Breaking Boundaries. All six movies in this summer series are about going beyond the status quo and challenging limits and expectations.

The Edge of the World (1937)
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are most well known for their two 1940s Technicolor classics "Black Narcissus" and "The Red Shoes," both of which were photographed by legendary British cinematographer Jack Cardiff. I hope you make an effort to see either (or both) of these magnificent movies. They are available at other streaming sources, including HBOMax and the Criterion Channel, and also on Criterion DVDs.

"The Edge of the World" is considered the best of Michael Powell's early films, when he was a prolific director in the 1930s. It is the only Michael Powell film currently on Kanopy. Here is the description of the film from Rotten Tomatoes:

The people of St. Kilda, a tiny Scottish island, have maintained the same simple lifestyle for generations. When the younger adults that inhabit the island begin to leave for more satisfyingly modern lives, the elders start to realize that their culture is disappearing. While James Gray (Finlay Currie), an important figure in the tiny community, grows pessimistic about the future of St. Kilda, his son, Andrew (Niall MacGinnis), is one of the few young people who refuse to desert their homes.

Please watch The Edge of the World on Kanopy before the discussion.
