Surviving the Last Minute College Admissions Scramble

Thursday, December 166:30—8:00 PMLower Level Meeting RoomMain Library129 Main Street, Concord, MA, 01742

This presentation is designed for parents whose children are applying to college at the last minute.  In some cases, this may be due to basic procrastination; in others, the mistaken belief that their Early Decision or Early Action choice would accept them (and thus there was no need to apply to other colleges).  This presentation will give you—as a parent—a path forward and the assurance you may need to avoid panic, anger, or exasperation.
A few of the issues we’ll cover:

  • How many schools can students realistically apply to, without their applications being slap-dash?
  • How can students maximize the time available to produce top-quality applications (rather than generic applications colleges readily spot as such)?
  • How can students (or you) assemble an appropriate list of colleges?  As a related matter, how can they (or you) realistically estimate their chances of admission?
  • How to target schools where their chances of admission are better than statistics would suggest.

We’ll also explore some less-obvious possibilities:

  • Whether and how to apply to foreign programs—which, in general, have later deadlines.
  • Whether to consider doing a gap year—and, if so, whether to wait to apply to college until next fall.
  • Whether and how to think about the transfer option, so that if top choice colleges say no now, your student can maximize the chances of admission in a year or two.

Audience participation and questions are encouraged. Face masks are required of all participants.
