Again, Spring: Korean Literati Painting (십군자, The Ten Gracious Plants)

Artist Statement
In the dance between nature and tradition, "The Ten Gracious Plants (십군자, Sibgunja)" celebrates the timeless virtues of Korean literati painters. This collection honors noble plants - plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo, magnolia, peony, lotus, grape, pine, and plantain -reflecting the soul of Korean culture. As winter's gentle veil of powdery snow melts away, spring breathes life into each brushstroke, capturing the serene change of seasons. These ten gracious plants, painted with reverence, symbolize resilience, purity, and elegance. They embody ancestral grace, wisdom, and virtue passed down through generations.
Through the delicate interplay of ink and ramie fabric, I reflect on the lives of the old mothers, whose strength and grace continue to inspire. Each plant, a beacon of virtue, invites us to cherish the deep connections between nature, heritage, and the human spirit.
Originally from South Korea, I teach traditional Korean painting at Camp Humphreys, the largest overseas U.S. military base, in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. I have presented my artworks “The Four Gracious Plants” (사군자, Sagunja) at Museum of Fine Arts Boston for the Lunar New Year celebration event, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul, Korea, and Pao Arts Center in Boston. I am also actively involved in cultural foundations including The Oksan.
